Costumes frequently changed between television shows and films, especially those set in different eras, for aesthetic and practical reasons. Occasionally, deliberate mixing of uniform styles from several series was employed to heighten the sense of time travel or alternate realms.

Why is this item so rare?

There was confusion around how captain kirk changes his uniform in the entire season.

The first season of TOS uniforms got made of a lime green satin velour; lighting gels and cameras diluted the color.

And made it appear less greenish on film, but it was nearly the same color as the wrap-around tunic, made of a lighter material.

The issue was that the velour was hot, and after a few occurrences, it started to smell, so they cleaned it, and it shrank, necessitating the purchase of new shirts.
