The story turns on point after his plane crashes in the South Pacific; Hanks portrays a FedEx troubleshooter left on an uninhabited island. Then, the plot pivots around his desperate endeavors to survive and return home. 

Filming began in January 1999 and ended in May 2000. On December 22, 2000, Cast Away was released in North America by 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Pictures in international markets by DreamWorks Pictures. 

The film earned $429 million globally. Critics lauded the film’s writing and Hanks’ performance, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor Motion Picture Drama.
