Janis Joplin 1964 Porsche

Who was Janis Joplin?

Janis Joplin 1964 Porsche fetched an incredible amount in the auction.

Janis Joplin, a singer who rose to prominence in the late 1960s, was recognized for her strong, blues-inspired vocals. She was born with a passion for music, but it wasn’t until she united the troupe Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 that her career took off. Cheap Thrills, their 1968 album, was a smash hit. However, Joplin and the band’s tensions led her to leave Big Brother shortly after.

I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama was Joplin’s first solo album in 1969. Although the album garnered mixed reviews, Joplin’s second album, Pearl (1971), published after her death, was a big hit.

What’s unique about the singer’s Porsche?

In 1968, Joplin purchased a Porsche. She drew Landscapes, butterflies, birds, mushrooms, floating eyeballs, and skull-like faces on her Porsche. Her mural covers from bumper to bumper and door to door. Janis’ astrological sign, Capricorn, is depicted on this automobile and a view from northern California.

The paint began to flake after a while, so her siblings had it repainted in light gray. Later on, they had various artists reconstruct the original artwork using original pictures. A gigantic face on the underside of the gasoline filler door remained uncovered from the initial repair.

Joplin’s 95-horsepower sports automobile is still in good working order today. It delivered all the sounds, joy, and direct feel of a superb classic Porsche on a trip through a New Jersey park.

How much is her Porsche worth today?

Since its restoration, Janis Joplin’s Porsche has been on display at several museums.

It was sold during RM Sotheby’s “Driven By Disruption” sale in New York City on December 10, 2015.

It was likely to fetch $400,000 to $600,000 at auction. But the winning offer was $1.76 million, shattering all prior records for Janis Joplin 1964 Porsche 356 bought at a public auction.
